Neuropsychiatry & behavioural neurology explained

About The Book

Neuropsychiatry Explained is one of the most popular textbooks of neuropsychiatry; sold out in the first edition! It is now available in a digital edition (with a stamped PDF). There also a very limited number of physical (hardback) copies.

PREFACE

In attempting to answer the question ‘What is neuropsychiatry?’, there is a danger of falling at the first hurdle. It seems too easy to say that neuropsychiatry concerns the interface of neurology and psychiatry. After all, which neurological condition does not feature a disturbance in mood or psychological distress? By the same token, which psychiatric condition has not been shown to encompass changes in neuroanatomy or neurophysiology at some level? To make this book more useful to clinicians I will define the remit of the book by the question ‘What are the psychiatric and behavioural consequences of neurological conditions that affect the brain, and how can these consequences be explained?’

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

What style of book would you find most appealing? Clearly it is impossible to know what every reader wants, and therefore I have tried to put together a text in a format that I would most like to read. I have tried hard to avoid the two major limitations inherent in medical textbooks. The first limitation is that textbooks tend to cover a large area too superficially. Consider how many times you have read that memory loss is a common complication of head injury or stroke. I challenge the reader not to accept these kinds of oversimplification, but to ask what type of memory loss occurs and in what circumstances. Only by questioning the status quo will progress be made in patient care. The second limitation is that textbooks are about 6 months out of date by the time they come to press. I am confident that the book is up to date as of the beginning of 2003 (see Appendix VI). In the fast-moving field of neuropsychiatry it is inevitable that new developments and discoveries will be made. The impact of which will inevitably enhance, challenge or in some cases make obsolete ‘facts’ as they stand today.
